PARTICLE REFLEX spacer 2001
spacer

Commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for the SFMOMA Experimental Design Awards exhibition.

Particle Reflex is an exploration into strategies for delineating a space that is indeterminate, retaining the possibility for a high degree of sectional variation after construction is complete. Liquid has the ability to conform to any configuration while continually maintaining its same volume, and it is this geometric relationship that the installation is most closely aligned.

Conceived as an ultra-thin articulated system that conforms to the parameters of the museum space and pedestrian traffic, Particle Reflex is tethered into the air via a system of springy bungee cords. Its porous skin of acrylic panels allows for variable configuration and unpredictable connective patterns to emerge during the course of its installation. Fixed though flexible, Particle Reflex presents a hypothetical tectonic network in pursuit of extreme adaptability.
